Sucreabeille: Wake The Dead

I'm making an effort to try new things and one of those ongoing new things is trying different scents.

This is more of a challenge than it might seem to most people because I am utterly repulsed by some very common scents, and also some very common scents are major migraine triggers. A lot of it is "chemicals" like room spray, especially bathroom spray, and cheap aerosol perfumes but some natural stuff like stargazer lilies also trigger them. It's fun! It's a fun time! (It's not a fun time.)

Perfume oils don't tend to have the same effect, maybe because I'm so rarely exposed to them. They cling close to the skin, an intimate secret. That intimacy is another reason I like perfume oils - I don't want to make other people smell me, whether it's a scent I think is pleasant (perfume) or one I don't (body odor, garlic sweat, etc.).

I've been getting subscription bags from Sucreabeille (no, that's not a referral link or anything) which means I've been getting fun little surprises. It's a nice thing to look forward to and so far I've had at least one perfume I've really liked out of each batch. And since each subscription bag costs about the price of one perfume, and has more than one perfume... it's good odds. Also I am a sucker for gacha pulls.

It's early spring, but one of the scents I got is Wake The Dead: Spanish coffee, bitter caramel, lavender syrup, soft amber, spice .

It doesn't quite smell like autumn, but it smells autumn adjacent if that makes sense. It's a warm heavy scent, soft, almost snuggly but with a bit of an edge to it. It's a scent I could sink in to; it's the olfactory equivalent of a comfortable sweater.

I don't pick up the coffee scent at all, unless "Spanish coffee" is something I'm not familiar with that's different from drip coffee/espresso. The bitter sweet absolutely comes through. I don't pick up on the lavender syrup much, unless it's adding to the sweetness - if there's anything floral here it's lurking in the background. The spice is nice and mellow.

I'm looking forward to wearing this when it's cold again, but right now I'm more in the mood for light smells. Not so much florals perhaps, but petrichor and green things and maybe honey.

Final Fantasy XIV Stream! (tomorrow)

Tomorrow, I also plan to take it easy. We'll be doing the latest Hildibrand, then clearing out more open quests from my journal. I also might just keep an eye on the discords and hop around to FATEs or hunt trains. Whatever looks interesting and chill.

Start time is 7:30pm for both streams -- or later. Lately, we haven't even started dinner until 6:50pm (much to my displeasure, but can't be helped). I'm also not sure how long I'll stream, but I figure it will be at least 60-90 minutes?

PSA: [community profile] communal_creators spring mini-round is soon!

[community profile] communal_creators is a community of creative types doing all sorts of things. We have two challenges a year: a week-long challenge in the spring and a month-long challenge in the fall.

The spring mini-round is starting a week from today! ANYWAY who creates is welcome to join. It's going to be time-based, and there are three tiers to choose from for your daily time goal.

Here's the sign-up post!

I'm serious when I say "anybody who creates". Yes, many of us are writers, but we also have fiber artists (knitting, crochet, weaving, and kumihimo braid), cross-stitchers and other needleworkers, vidders, animators, music creation, bakers... and I'm probably leaving something out.

My goals:
* finish the first sleeve of my cardigan
* maybe work on the t-shirt
* do another section of Neocities work
* write some, hopefully finishing a fic

Which is plenty given that it's just a week long, but it should be a mostly free week for me, except for work. I've got nothing else planned during the week, so hope to make some good progress.

Also tooting my own horn: someone asked for a tracking spreadsheet, so I made one this morning. You can find it in the comments of the sign-up post.

Spring-ish

I have had a long-standing fascination with ancient Egypt, and this morning I learned that Thoth had a female counterpart - Seshat. This is a lengthy piece about them but an interesting one. Seshat is known as the Mistress of the House of Life, which was what they called the small libraries attached to temple complexes. These were a sort of shared working space where scribes could research, write, etc. She was also known as Foremost in the Library. Another interesting note is that while there are depictions of women holding scribe's tools, indicating that they could write, Seshat is the only woman depicted in the act of writing.

There's a cold front coming through again, which I welcome, because I am not enjoying 90 degree days. Let me have a little more cold weather before summer starts beating me up. We've opened the windows back up and the change is wonderful. I slept very badly last night and I'm trying to not just fall asleep right now on the couch. I'm having a cup of coffee, then I'll try doing some yoga.

I have plants to set out in the garden, though it's going to be chilly enough for a couple of nights that we might throw a frost blanket over the beds just to keep them from getting too cold shocked. The key lime tree that I had declared dead ... is putting out leaves. It'll need a pretty radical pruning but it's alive. So all four trees made it through the freezes, and the yuzu took no damage at all.

I need to catch up my notecards for St. Felix, but I'm finally seeing how the particular story arc I started will play out. No need to push the plot right now, I feel like writing some more world-building pieces and introducing characters. Yes, Jonesy will be back. :D I kind of want to do something where I can mention some of the schools there - Atalanta Springs High, where they have a superb girls' cross-country team, and the St. Felix High Wampus Cats. Go cats! And since I mentioned putting Handsome George on the county seal I should probably work on drawing one up.

I've been so lazy today I haven't even practiced the ukulele or anything. I did manage to bake some bread but man, I am dragging.

(no subject)

"What did you say?"
"DOG," Jonesy declared. To the cat, every animal larger than him was a dog, so it could be anything. Albert groaned and sat up, rubbing his eyes. Unless he went to check on this thing, Jonesy wouldn't leave him alone. He tottered to the window and pulled the blackout curtains open enough to see.
"DOG," Jonesy said again.
It wasn't a dog any more than Muffin was a dog, but this creature was much larger. The head region seemed to be a glowing void similar to Muffin's, but no corolla of tentacles surrounded it. Albert's sleepy brain wondered if they were there to protect the void somehow.
The "dog" turned, apparently having stopped to examine something, and lumbered down the road in the direction of the lake.
